VOKA Antwerp Waasland, the Chamber of Commerce for companies around the second city of Belgium, sounds the alarm. A new shortage on the job market is emerging. Of 7,000 job vacancies in this region for ‘simple’, purely administrative jobs, 800 remained unfilled last year.
This situation is quite unusual and unique in recent history. Shortages on the labor market are a well known phenomenon, but for these types of jobs. Given the rapid economic growth of the past year, administrative jobs in areas such as wage administration, order processing and accounting are on the rise. But due to lack of qualified personnel, many companies are struggling and meet a new bottleneck for their growth.
We think that for this particular labour shortage, a new type of co-worker is particularly well placed. Software robots are good at performing the same, rule-based administrative tasks over and over again. They don’t take holidays, they are never sick and they don’t lose their attention while performing their work. Moreover, the cost to perform an administrative process by robots is often 50 to 80% cheaper than performing it by colleagues of flesh and blood.
